* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: Jackie and Shadow’s vocals 🎶 filled the air at 5:29. Luna and Sandy were left in charge for over three hours starting at 8:33. They rested a bit, and moved sticks and fluff around. Luna also had a winger-size 🪽 fest at 9:08 – doing wingers, hops and stomps, many times. After a nap Sandy decided to do a round of wingers too around 12:25. In the evening, 🌇 around 17:49, Luna and Sandy engaged in a bit of friendly “dueling” – showing off their wingspans, stomping, and exchanging a few beaky kisses. 😘 Jackie and Shadow spent some time together on Cactus Snag, then at 19:53, Shadow delivered dinner 🐟 which Jackie promptly fed to the chicks. 🌙 Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow, Luna and Sandy, we love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments: Shadow must have found a great deal on fluff 🌿 this morning, because he delivered a large bundle at 7:39. Jackie, Sandy, and Luna immediately pounced upon the fresh nesting material, and Shadow left them to it. After his departure, several rounds of tug-o-fluff ensued between Jackie and the chicks – each apparently having their own idea of where the new additions should be placed. Nestorations 🪹 such as these are not only great bonding 💖opportunities for Jackie, Shadow, Sandy and Luna, but also wonderful moments for us to watch all four of their personalities shine. ✨
* Daily Fun Fact: “PREEN OIL” This oil comes from the Uropygial Gland located at the base of the tail. They spread this oil when preening to keep their feathers waterproof, clean, and flexible. 🪶The oil shifts to optimize flexibility and wind resistance for long-distance, high-altitude flights. The preen oil acts exactly like a specialized conditioner, keeping those micro-hooks supple, flexible, and perfectly lubricated so they can endlessly zip and unzip without breaking. Because preen oil is incredibly sticky, it acts like a magnet for nest dust, dander, and bits of old fish scales. This is why you will almost always see an eagle do a massive, full-body rouse (shudder) right after oil preening. The rouse shakes off all the debris that stuck to the fresh oil, leaving the bird completely pristine! 🪶
* Daddy Duties: Shadow had 11 nest 🪺 visits. Total nest time for Shadow was 6 hours, 36 min. Bringing 3 fish to His Chicks and Queen Jackie. 🐟
* Munchies and Mutes: Jackie and Shadow served 4 feedings. Luna and Sandy partook in 😋 self-feeding . Full crops were observed on both chicks. 29+ PS🐥(Poop Shots) were sliced, 0 were on 🎯!!
