* The Big Bear Nest Diaries:The gusting wind 🌬️ did not bother Jackie as she slept through the night. The morning shift change started at 6:07 Shadow came in to take over. 🪺 Jackie went to the LS for a few minutes then flew off at 6:20. There were a lot of in and outs on the nest throughout the day as Jackie & Shadow continued to take turns. They both visited The LS, CS and TP today. 🌲 When night came Shadow spent some time on the nest, before meeting up with Jackie on the Cactus Snag. They mated at 17:50 😘, then Jackie headed back to the nest. 🌙 Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow, we love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments:As everything settles down after a busy morning ☀️, a sense of calm returns to the nest 🪺. Jackie gently takes a brief nap at 15:25 while continuing to carefully incubate their precious eggs, 🪺 never straying far from her duty. The winds 🌬️ sway every branch around her, a reminder of the ever changing valley, yet her focus remains steady.
* Daily Fun Fact: ”EAGLE 🦅 MATING” The act of mating 💕 itself is extremely fast, usually lasting only 7-12 seconds. Because birds lack external genitalia, fertilization happens through a “cloacal kiss 😘” where the male balances on the female's back and their reproductive openings touch briefly to transfer sperm. During peak breeding season a pair may mate several times a day to ensure fertilization and strengthen their pair bond 💗. A male eagle's sperm can remain viable inside the female for up to 10 days, allowing her to form the eggs. Increasing daylight hours triggers the female's fertility, while the hormone prolactin eventually “turns off” her reproductive cycle once eggs 🪺 are laid. An Eagle will continue to mate year round for bonding purposes. Females often initiate mating by “bowing” or using special vocalization 🎼 to signal readiness their mate recognizes. 🥰🪶
