* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: ℹ️Naming contest closes tonight at 11:59 PST, get your names submitted before then: Chick Naming Contest 😀 With Jackie’s dedication she kept her chicks warm and toasty beneath her throughout the night. Some snow ❄️ did stick to the nest, but the chicks were nice and dry when we got a good look at them this morning! Shadow brought the first fish for breakfast at 6:59 then flew out to the Simba Tree while Jackie fed 🐟 the chicks. Seems Jackie & Shadow are on the mend from last week's happenings! We are happy to see Shadow’s left foot appears to be healing with less swelling and limping. Jackie seems to be in the clear from the fishing line too. Both are doing their normal eagle things including taking care of the chicks 🐥 throughout the day. Mid-afternoon, snow is melting and the sun 🌤️ is peeking out! At night we did observe some territorial activity with ravens starting around 18:43. Afterwards Jackie brought a fish at 18:59, and Shadow flew out.🌙 Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow and chicks, we love you. ♥️
* Quiet Moments: As the snow ❄️ melted softly this afternoon, Jackie and Shadow worked together bringing in fresh fluff 🍃, and carefully arranging it into a soft new bed for their growing chicks. After the chill of last night, their efforts added a quiet comfort to the nest 🪹, a gentle reset touched by care. Tucked safely beneath their Momma! Jackie kept the little ones warm, her steady presence a reminder that even as the cold lingers, they are always sheltered in her warmth. ♥️
* Daily Fun Fact: “EAGLE TERRITORY” A typical nesting 🪺 territory ranges from 1-6 square miles, though it can expand up to 15 square miles if food is scarce. ( Plenty of food available at BBV nest, ☺️) While their “home range” (where they hunt) can be vast, eagles 🦅 primarily defend a smaller “nest territory” roughly a 1-mile diameter around the nest vigilantly. To mark their territory, eagles do not use scent like mammals. Instead they perch prominently in high, exposed 🌲 branches to signal their occupation to others. Intruders are met with specific alarm 🚨 calls, such as high-pitched “peal” or “chatter”. Some observations show that territory defense is often sex-specific; resident males typically chase off male intruders, while females chase off females. However, eagles may drive away hawks, owls 🦉, and vultures from their immediate nesting area. Most eagles exhibit strong site fidelity, returning to the same territory for decades, sometimes up to 30 years. 🪶
