* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: After another night spent in charge of the nest, Luna and Sandy awoke to a brilliant orange sunrise 🌄 and eagerly watched the valley around them. Both chicks seem to be finding their voices, as their vocals were heard even louder in the morning air, especially after Jackie and Shadow each delivered sticks. Shadow brought break-fish-t 🐟 at 7:42 and the chicks self-feed. Luna and Sandy have been doing their best hops and jumps with their wingers today. Sandy branches a few times today on the Back Porch including at 17:01. At 19:15 Luna 🎉 branched for the first time on the back porch! Way to go Luna! 👏 🌙 Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow, Luna and Sandy, we love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments: The evening hours weren’t exactly quiet, but they sure were entertaining to watch! After Luna’s first branching, the chicks showed off with an impressive round of “winger-zoomies.” 😃 Both Sandy and Luna took turns enthusiastically flapping 🪽, hopping and jumping around the nest – each one pausing just long enough to let the other have their turn before starting back up again, as if to say “now watch this!” They went back and forth like this for a bit before eventually settling down in the nest together, ready to rest after all the activity. 💗
* Daily Fun Fact: 🦅”A TYPICAL DAILY ROUTINE” While eagles are known for their majestic soaring, a typical day is surprisingly sedentary and centered around conserving energy. At dawn 🌄 (7:00 AM-9:00 AM), eagles are most active as the early morning hours are a peak time for “shift changes” at the nest, territorial calling, and initial hunting. Mid-Day 🌞 (10:00 AM-3:00 PM) is largely a period of perching and loafing. Bald eagles spend roughly 90% to 95% of their daylight hours simply sitting on a branch 🌲 or resting in the nest 🪹, depending on their age. Adults use this time to scan for prey with their high-powered vision or wait for thermal updrafts to make flying more efficient, while chicks watch the world around them and snooze. 😴 In the late afternoon (4:00 PM-6:00 PM), activity picks up again for a final round of foraging or restoration before sunset. After dark, 🌙 adult eagles generally do not sleep in the nest (unless brooding eggs or young chicks), instead they find a nearby “roost” tree, where they can still supervise the nest. They sleep in short 10-20 minute bursts throughout the night to stay alert for predators. 🪶
* Daddy Duties: Shadow had 7 nest 🪺 visits. Total nest time for Shadow was 32 mins. Bringing 4 fish to His Chicks and Queen Jackie. 🐟
* Munchies and Mutes: Jackie and Shadow served 4 feedings. Luna and Sandy partook in 😋 self-feeding . Full crops were observed on both chicks. 25+ PS🐥(Poop Shots) were sliced, 0 were right on 🎯!!
