* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: It was a beautiful and sunny ☀️ day early this morning. At 4:54 Sandy casted a pellet. Breakfast was served at 7:03 by Shadow, soon after Sandy did some jumping wingers. Around 10:00 Sandy and Luna did a bit of nestorations with the new greenery decor that Jackie had brought. The weather also started to get a bit more windy 🌬️. 11:52 Shadow visits the Simba Tree for a moment and one of his feathers floats off into the wind. 13:43, Luna branches on the back porch, and monkey see, monkey do, Sandy decides to do it too at 14:22. Sandy also vocalizes 🎶 for a bit at 17:29 really finding their voice. The chicks appear to be having their 3rd night in charge. 🌙 Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow, Luna and Sandy, we love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments: Today, Shadow spent some quiet time perched on Simba Tree, enjoying a well deserved break. After tirelessly providing food and caring for his family, it was nice to see him simply pause and rest. While Jackie, Sandy and Luna continue to thrive, Shadow remains the devoted dad behind it all. Even the hardest working parents deserve a little time to relax and enjoy the view. 🦅♥️
* Daily Fun Fact: "PERFECT BALANCE" Molting—the process of shedding old, worn-out feathers to make room for crisp, new ones—is an incredible biological puzzle for eagles. Because their survival relies entirely on perfect flight and precise hunting. Whether it is a fast-growing eaglet or a mature adult like Jackie or Shadow, the way an eagle molts is a masterclass in aerodynamic survival. An eaglet goes through an incredibly rapid feather transformation in its first two months of life: They are born with a fine, cottony white down called natal down. They rapidly push out a secondary, thicker, woolly gray down called thermal down to keep them insulated. By day 35 to 45, their hard, dark juvenile flight feathers push the gray down out, resulting in the "messy, fuzzy coat" look. When adult eagles molt their primary flight feathers on their wings, they do it in a strictly synchronized, symmetrical pattern. If an eagle drops a specific flight feather on its left wing, the exact matching feather on its right wing will drop at almost the same time. 🪶
