* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: Sandy slept standing for a good part of the night ✨. Then the morning started with the chicks still in charge of the nest! Luna was observed branching on Y branch for the first time at 6:05 🥳 Sandy casted a pellet at 6:57. Shadow brought the first fish 🐟 of the day at 7:35, which Luna and Sandy self-fed on. At 10:42 Sandy made some adorable honks while panting, so cute. 🥰 While Jackie is away, the chicks will play. Luna and Sandy spent time doing wingers and branching on the back porch tonight while Jackie was on the Cactus 🌵 Snag starting around 18:24. While we had a beautiful sunset tonight the chicks couldn’t make up their minds where a stick should go at 20:06. 😂 Jackie did a quick visit to the basement at 20:24. 🌙 Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow, Luna and Sandy, we love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments: With Luna branched on Back Porch and Sandy standing close by, the pair treated us to several up-close and adorable sibling interactions this afternoon. At 12:23, Sandy and Luna exchanged sweet beaky kisses. 😘 Moments later, at 12:24, as Luna perched in a horaltic pose and soaked up the mid-day sun ☀️, Sandy gently nibbled at his feathers. 🪶 A few more beaky kisses were shared and then the chicks kept watching – taking in the habitat and continuing to learn, side-by-side. 💗
* Daily Fun Fact: “Mantle” One of the most distinctive actions is mantling, a protective posture used to guard a hard-earned meal 🐟. Mantling occurs when an eagle hunches its shoulders and spreads its wings and tail to cover its prey. This creates a physical “tent” ⛺ that hides the food from sight of others. Beyond just hiding food, an eagle will fluff its feathers 🪶 to appear larger and more intimidating. The term comes from the word mantle, meaning a cloak or coving. It also refers to the “mantle” feathers on an eagle's 🦅 upper back that they prominently display during the pose. Eaglets begin practicing this instinctual behavior early. Young chicks are often seen mantling over fish brought by parents to prevent their sibling from “stealing” the best parts of the fish. 🪶
* Daddy Duties: Shadow had 3 nest 🪺 visits. Total nest time for Shadow was 0 hours, 4 min. Bringing 2 fish to His Chicks and Queen Jackie. 🐟
