* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: An adult was observed this morning going 🦅 to the Cactus Snag at 5:40, it perched for a while. The nest 🪹 has had lots of activity throughout the morning. A Red-breasted Nuthatch at 6:16, Mountain Chickadee 6:28, Black-headed Grosbeak 7:49, and another Red-breasted Nuthatch 11:29 just to name a few. 🥰 Tonight at 18:03 a Sub-adult was seen on the Cactus 🌵 Snag, while a White-breasted Nuthatch visited the nest. At 19:50 we spotted an Adult and a Sub-adult in the Roost Tree.🌙 Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow, Luna and Sandy, we love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments: Though the eagles 🦅 have been away from the nest, life still bustles among the high 🌲 pine branches as curious chipmunks dart across the empty 🪹 platform. Lively mountain chickadees and red-breasted nuthatches flutter in to visit, keeping a gentle, playful energy ✨ alive in the quiet canopy.
* Daily Fun Fact: 🐿️ FIONA & FAST FREDDIE: Fiona and Freddie are a pair of San Bernardino flying Squirrels. These elusive nocturnal “expert gliders” are essential for forest health and have fascinating traits. By spreading their furry skin membrane (patagium) they can glide up to 300 feet at a time. They make sharp 180 degree turns and full semi-circles in a single glide by using their flat paddle-like tails to steer and brake. They typically visit the nest at night after dark to scavenge for ”Eagle leftovers”, searching through sticks for morsels. They eat underground truffle fungi. By eating these fungi, they spread fungal spores throughout the forest floor. These fungi are vital for helping trees absorb water and nutrients. Jackie is usually indifferent to their presence but is known to deliver a “wing-slap” if startled by a surprise visit. 🪶
