* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: Early this morning with the sun ☀️ shining, Shadow was seen going to the Lookout Snag 🌲 at 5:54. A banded Sub-adult landed there too at 6:38, and Shadow 🦅 flew off. On the nest, a Mountain Chickadee 🐦 visited at 8:33, and an Acorn Woodpecker flew by at 9:13. A Sub-adult also visited the nest at 11:05 and hung out for a little while. It looked around and moved some sticks. It left and went to Cactus 🌵Snag, then flew off again after a few minutes. The afternoon was quiet, with just a few rumbles of thunder ⛈️ and raindrops. At 16:09 a Steller’s Jay visited, beautiful bird. Tonight one Sub-adult was seen in the Roost Tree. 🌙 Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow, Luna and Sandy, we love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments: Even in the off-season, the nest 🪹 is still a gathering place for many. For small birds, chipmunks 🐿️ and squirrels, it is the prime place to forage for tiny treasures or leftover morsels of food. For visiting eagles, it may be an intriguing place to stop and explore. 👀 And for many of us, it is the place we meet to connect with nature and with each other – for eagle family 🦅 and human viewing community alike, the nest is home. 🏠
* Daily Fun Fact: “OFF SEASON”: During the non-breeding 💞 season, bald eagles switch into "power-save mode." Without eggs 🐣 to incubate or chicks to feed, they spend most of their days lazily perching high in tall 🌳 trees, watching the water, and soaring on thermal wind currents to conserve energy. While breeding pairs stay strictly loyal to their territory during nesting 🪺 season, off-season eagles often travel to seasonal feeding grounds. In areas with water, they congregate near open rivers and lakes, sometimes gathering in groups. While they fiercely 💂 guard their nest trees during egg season, eagles relax their boundaries during the off-season. It is not uncommon to see multiple adult and juvenile eagles roosting together in the same 🌲 tree line without the usual drama. Resident 🦅 pairs (like Jackie and Shadow, who stay in Big Bear year-round) still hang out together during the off-season. They occasionally drop by the nest for "stick maintenance" or just to perch nearby and keep their bond strong before the cold weather returns. 💗🪶
