* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: The morning was full of excitement as Jackie fed both chicks breakfast at 5:57. Shadow was captured flying to the Cactus 🌵 Snag at 6:58 watching over the territory. Both chicks are feeding well throughout the day. Around 14:43 Jackie and Shadow gave some warning calls 🎵 to ravens that we could hear vocalizing. The rest of the afternoon was pretty calm with more feedings. We observed that both chicks had a full crop during the 18:54 feeding. 🌙 Roost snug, Jackie & Shadow and chicks, we love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments: Another gentle day unfolding as the chicks continue to thrive. Their crops are full, their strength growing with each feeding, a true sign of how well they’re being cared for. At times, their tiny heads bonk each other in those clumsy, curious movements completely normal, and somehow making them even more endearing. With every wiggle, every stretch, their sweetness shines through, melting our hearts a little more each day. ♥️
* Daily Fun Fact: “BONKING” Sibling Rivalry (aka Bonking) is common. 😁 Dominant chicks tend to eat 1st while smaller one's wait & invent creative ways to get their food, like walk around or wait till the bigger chicks go into a food coma. Jackie & Shadow often do tandem feedings as well. Bonking usually subsides once there is a "pecking order". Plentiful food from Big Bear and abundant brooding by Jackie & Shadow also decreases bonking behavior. Historically, sibling rivalry on the Big Bear Bald Eagle nest has been mild. The lake provides a lot of fish 🐟 and waterfowl and Jackie & Shadow brood a lot due to the climate. The rivalry quickly turns into friendship.😊 A chick being bonked may lie down and assume a submissive stance with its head down. Kind of like a white 🏳️ flag. It does not mean that the chick is unconscious or injured.😘🪶
* Daddy Duties: Shadow had 5 nest 🪺 visits, 12 brooding sessions. Total nest time for Shadow was 4 hours, 59 min. Bringing 2 fish to His Chicks and Queen Jackie. 🐟
* Munchies and Mutes: Jackie and Shadow served 17 feedings. Full crops were observed on both chicks. 6 PS🐥(Poop Shots) were sliced, 1 was right on 🎯!!
