* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: Jackie and Shadow’s vocals echoed throughout the valley early this morning as they awoke. Shadow got to be the first to feed 🐟 the chicks today at 6:40. A Cooper’s Hawk flew through without a care at 9:04. Meanwhile, Shadow gave Jackie a nice long break and was on the nest 🪹 for several hours during the afternoon. Around 13:48 Chick 1 did get out of the nest bowl, but was able to get back into it with some help from Shadow. We heard some coyotes at 18:34 while Jackie continued to brood the chicks. 🌙 Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow and Chicks, We love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments: A quiet moment on the nest today brought such a sweet reminder of how fast these little ones 🐥 are growing. As Jackie and Shadow took turns brooding, one curious chick peeked out from beneath them, eager to catch a glimpse of the world beyond. It was such a tender and heartwarming sight this tiny explorer was already showing signs of independence. Moments like these say so much about Jackie and Shadow, how well they’re feeding and caring for their babies. Day by day, their love and dedication are helping these chicks grow stronger, braver, and more curious. 💗
* Daily Fun Fact: “PANTING 🥵” Since birds 🦅 don't have sweat glands, they open their mouths to let the heat escape through the moist membranes of their throat and lungs 🫁. If you see a close-up on the nest cam while they are panting, you might notice a small hole at the base of their tongue. That is the glottis, the opening to their windpipe. When they pant, they open this wide to move as much air as possible directly into their respiratory system to cool down. 🪶
* Daddy Duties: Shadow had 7 nest 🪺 visits, 9 brooding sessions. Total nest time for Shadow was 7 hours, 23 min. Bringing 2 fish to his Chicks and Queen Jackie. 🐟
* Munchies and Mutes: Jackie and Shadow served 8 feedings. Full crops were observed on both chicks. 21+ PS🐥(Poop Shots) were sliced, 0 were right on 🎯!!
