* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: : Early this morning, Jackie vocalizes 🎶 and gets a reply from Shadow before leaving the nest at 5:39. Luna and Sandy entertain themselves with quite a few wingers 🪽 jumping around the nest. Meanwhile, Jackie takes us on a tour of the trees 🌲 on camera 2 – she goes to the Cactus Snag at 5:46, then the Simba Tree at 9:48, and finally to the Lookout Snag at 11:28. In the nest, Sandy swallows a fish whole only for it to come back out at 14:48 😂. Luna and Sandy then proceed to both self-feed on it. 17:22: Is that a shark 🦈 or an eaglet? Luna has a wing up like a shark fin, something we usually see Shadow do. Both get bites from Shadow who feeds them at 18:30. Later Sandy has a bit of target 🎯 practice at 18:47 with a poop-shot, sorry Shadow. The two chicks end their evening chasing (and catching!) bugs around the nest. 🌙 Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow, Luna and Sandy, we love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments: As the sun slowly set this evening, 🌇 Shadow watched over his chicks and the valley below. Luna rested soundly in the nest, while Sandy stood close by, first preening and watching just like Shadow, then gradually drifting off to sleep 😪 herself. As the chicks peacefully slumbered, Shadow continued his watch – enchanting us all from his spot on the front porch.❣️
* Daily Fun Fact: “EAGLES CROP” 🥡The crop is eagles "to go” box, an expandable part of the esophagus where they store food (up to 2lbs). When an eagle 🦅 has a massive meal, you can actually see it! A full crop looks like a large, rounded bulge sticking out of their upper chest. The crop allows them to eat an entire fish 🐟 in minutes so they can get back to the safety of their nest or high 🌲 branch. Once they are settled, the crop slowly releases small amounts of food into the stomach (the proventriculus and gizzard) over several hours. The crop 🥡 acts like a holding tank where food is softened by saliva and body heat ♨️ before it hits the heavy-duty stomach acid. Even if they don't bring fish 🐟 back in their talons, they have a “hidden” reserve of food. Eagles can go for days without food if their crop is full. It's a quick way to store food and slowly digest later, often while parched and resting. 🦅🪶
* Daddy Duties: Shadow had 5 nest 🪺 visits. Total nest time for Shadow was 3 hours, 26 min. Bringing 3 fish to His Chicks and Queen Jackie. 🐟
* Munchies and Mutes: Jackie and Shadow served 2 feedings. Luna and Sandy partook in 😋 self-feeding . Full crops were observed on both chicks. 30+ PS🐥(Poop Shots) were sliced, 1 was right on 🎯!!
