* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: As the sunrise 🌄 filled the valley, Sandy and Luna took turns practicing their wingers 🪽 and either standing or resting in the nest. Meanwhile, Jackie tried to take some time for herself out on Lookout then Cactus 🌵 Snags, but was accompanied by some very persistent Steller’s Jays. A Lodgepoll chipmunk 🐿️ came by for a visit on the nest at 9:28, both chicks watched. Both chicks self-fed on the first fish that was delivered at 12:52. Jackie got a few bites of the fish 🐟 around 13:32. Shadow must have been hungry 😋 because he ate quite a bit of the fish at 17:25. 🌙Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow, Luna and Sandy, we love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments: At 12:51 Jackie arrived with a fish 🐟 for Sandy and Luna, making sure her growing chicks were well cared for. Afterwards, she spent the afternoon perched on the attic. From her look out, Jackie kept a watchful eye on Sandy and Luna while also taking time to enjoy a beautiful view of the valley below. As Sandy and Luna grow more independent, Mom is never far away always watching over her family ♥️
* Daily Fun Fact: "STELLER'S BLUE JAY" The Steller’s jay (Cyanocitta stelleri) is often called a "Steller's blue jay" because of its striking plumage, but it is actually a distinct cousin to the common Blue Jay found in the eastern US. Steller’s jays are world-class impersonators. Their favorite parlor trick is mimicking the exact, piercing scream of a Red-tailed Hawk or a Red-shouldered Hawk. When a jay wants to clear out a backyard bird feeder or steal food from another bird, it will land nearby and belt out a perfect hawk scream. The electric blue color you see is entirely an optical illusion caused by structural coloration. The microscopic structure of their feathers bends and scatters light waves, reflecting only the blue light back to your eyes while absorbing the rest. The prominent, charcoal-black crest on top of a Steller’s jay's head acts like an emotional barometer. You can read a jay's mind just by looking at the angle of its mohawk. 🪶
