* The Big Bear Nest Diaries: Happy National Eagle Day! 🦅 The day 🌞 started with Luna and Sandy getting breakfast 🐟 delivered by Shadow at 6:54. Luna and Sandy both spent some time doing wingers and nestoration. Luna was mostly doing lots of wingers on the back porch area! At 13:07 Sandy was observed branching on the front porch for the first time! 🥳 Yay! Such a Big girl. Jackie came at 13:42 with fish #2, both Luna and Sandy self-fed 😋. Luna and Sandy must have been feeling full because at 17:07 they decided to lay down, moving sticks, instead of eating the rest of the fish. Shadow must have been hungry too because he ate at 17:20 while also giving the both chicks some bites. 😂 Jackie and Shadow vocalized after Shadow left the nest 🪹 tonight at 19:41. 🌙 Roost Snug Jackie & Shadow, Luna and Sandy, we love you! ♥️
* Quiet Moments: In between the midday fish 🐟 deliveries, Sandy and Luna had a few quiet moments for nestorations. Around 14:09, both chicks dug a bit in the nest 🪹, then Luna moved a small stick around. Sandy watched and decided to try and move a few sticks herself, only to then have Luna sit on one of the sticks she was trying to relocate. 😂 She moved on to nibbling at Luna’s wing instead, which he tolerated just briefly. Nestorations complete (and some patience tested), the two chicks moved to the rails, where they perched and watched before their next round of nestivities began. ❣️
* Daily Fun Fact: Big Bear Bald Eagle Nest, Located 145 feet high in a Jeffery pine tree🌲within the San Bernardino National Forest. The dark bark of the Jeffrey Pine smells like butterscotch or vanilla. The nest 🪹 is approximately 5.5 feet wide and 6 feet deep, and was built in 2012 by a previous eagle pair, Ricky and Lucy, who later built a new nest nearby and in 2016 left the territory. Friends of Big Bear 🐻 Valley installed a solar-powered webcam in 2015 to monitor the nest. Jackie first appeared on camera in the fall of 2016 and started using the nest in 2017. Shadow was once an “intruder” who replaced Jackie’s former mate (Mr.B) in 2018 winning her over through his persistence and nest building skills. The camera uses infrared light at night, which is invisible to eagles. At nearly 7,000 feet, this nest faces extreme conditions such as thin oxygen and heavy ❄️ snow. To ensure the eagles safety, the U.S. Forest Service closes the surrounding area every year from December through July to campers. 🪶
* Daddy Duties: Shadow had 3 nest 🪺 visits. Total nest time for Shadow was 4 hours,13 min. Bringing 3 fish to His Chicks and Queen Jackie. 🐟
* Munchies and Mutes: Jackie and Shadow served 2 feedings. Luna and Sandy partook in 😋 self-feeding . Full crops were observed on both chicks. 39+ PS🐥(Poop Shots) were sliced, 0 were on 🎯!!
